COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Students will be introduced to a method of "Science/Evidence" based policing. Students will demonstrate the risks relying solely on human factors by evaluating three police interrogation case studies and through a series of six short exercises. Students will research assigned case studies and present their knowledge and comprehension as it relates to Miranda.
Students will recognize their responsibility for the safety of juveniles, including the new laws effective July 1, 2024. Students will demonstrate their knowledge in applying these learning modules in the form of nonaccusatorial interrogations with the instructor. Interviewing - Interview Psychology, the BATI Interview Protocol, DeEscalation & Rapport building, Open-ended questioning vs. Direct Questions, Credibility Assessment Interviewing. Interrogation - Interrogator Demeanor & Protocol, Accountability Tactics, Theme Development & Delivery, Protecting Against False Confession, and Closing the Investigation.
